Amazon Advertising Interview Questions (Experienced)

For 2+ year Amazon PPC and advertising roles — the strategy, bidding, DSP, measurement, and scaling questions that separate operators from button-pushers, with model answers.

How to use this page

These assume you know the basics and probe judgment: account structure at scale, advanced bidding, full-funnel and DSP, 2026 measurement changes, and real scenarios. Answer with reasoning and trade-offs, not just definitions. Each answer links to the deeper lesson.

Interviewing for a senior role? Pair this with the strategy and measurement modules of the Amazon Advertising course — Modules 7–9 cover the DSP, attribution, and scaling depth these questions expect.

01Account Strategy & Structure

How do you structure an ad account at scale?

With isolation architecture: separate campaigns by product/ASIN, match type, and strategic intent (brand defense, competitor, generic) so you can read, fund, and scale each independently. See campaign structure.

How do you allocate budget across the funnel?

A common split is roughly 45–55% bottom-funnel conversion, 25–30% mid-funnel consideration, and 20–25% top-funnel awareness, layered with the 70/20/10 rule and funded by SKU job. See budget allocation.

What is the 70/20/10 rule?

It allocates about 70% of budget to proven, profitable campaigns, 20% to scaling campaigns with demonstrated potential, and 10% to testing new keywords, products, and formats — keeping most spend on what works while feeding a pipeline of future winners.

How do you use portfolios?

Portfolios group related campaigns — by product line, brand, or season — for consolidated reporting and budget caps across the group. They keep large accounts navigable and let you cap spend at a theme level.

How do you diagnose an account that is over-reliant on ads?

Check the share of revenue coming from ads — healthy is around 50–60%. Above two-thirds usually signals a structural weakness (listing, price, product, or organic rank) that ads are propping up. Track it alongside a falling TACoS.

02Advanced Bidding & Optimization

Explain the dynamic bidding strategies.

Dynamic bidding has three modes: Down Only (lowers bids when a conversion is unlikely), Up and Down (raises up to 100% for likely conversions and lowers otherwise), and Fixed (no adjustment). Down Only is safest; Up and Down is most aggressive.

How do placement modifiers interact with dynamic bidding?

Placement modifiers (up to +900% for Top of Search and Product Pages) stack on top of dynamic bidding: effective bid = base × dynamic adjustment × placement modifier. Up and Down plus a large modifier can spike CPCs fast, so watch the compounding. See placements.

What is the maximum profitable CPC and how do you calculate it?

Max profitable CPC ≈ price × conversion rate × target ACoS. It sets the ceiling on what you can afford to bid, which is why improving conversion rate raises your competitive ceiling in the auction.

What is dayparting and when is it worth it?

Dayparting adjusts bids or budgets by time of day or day of week based on when conversions happen. It’s worth it once you have enough data to see clear performance patterns, typically via rules or third-party tools fed by Amazon Marketing Stream.

How do you scale a campaign without ACoS spiking?

Stabilize first (control ACoS, cut waste, confirm TACoS is flat or falling), then raise winning bids incrementally — about 10–15% per week — and watch roughly 14 days before the next move. Fast jumps reset the algorithm’s learning and spike ACoS. See how to scale.

03Full-Funnel, Display & DSP

When should a brand graduate from Sponsored Ads to DSP?

When you’ve saturated high-intent search demand and need to create demand or reach off-Amazon audiences at scale — often once you’re running meaningful monthly spend. DSP adds audience-based, full-funnel reach on and off Amazon.

What is the difference between Sponsored Display and DSP?

Both do display and retargeting, but Sponsored Display is self-serve inside the Ads Console with simpler audiences, while DSP is programmatic with far richer audience targeting, more inventory, and higher entry budgets. See DSP vs Sponsored Ads.

What are AMC custom audiences?

AMC audiences are DSP segments built in Amazon Marketing Cloud’s clean room from raw signals — cross-sell, win-back, deep-intent, suppression — expressing logic the standard catalog can’t. They turn DSP from a catalog buyer into a precision instrument.

What is a full-funnel Amazon strategy?

Running awareness (DSP, Sponsored TV, Brands), consideration (Display, broad keywords), and conversion (Sponsored Products, retargeting) as one connected system, measured on TACoS and new-to-brand rather than campaign ACoS alone. See full-funnel strategy.

What is the new-to-brand metric and why does it matter?

New-to-brand measures orders or customers who are new to your brand over the past year. It shows whether advertising is acquiring new customers rather than recycling existing ones — essential for judging upper-funnel and scaling.

04Measurement & Attribution

How do you explain the 2026 attribution changes?

From January 2026 Amazon moved to a shopping-signal enhanced last-touch model, retiring the blind 14-day view-through window so an ML model judges whether a view actually influenced the purchase. Many advertisers saw attributed revenue decline — a measurement change, not a performance drop. See Amazon attribution.

What is Amazon Marketing Cloud used for?

AMC is a privacy-safe clean room for advanced measurement — path-to-purchase, incrementality, overlap and de-duplication, and frequency analysis — as well as building custom audiences. Access is via SQL or third-party tools.

What is Amazon Marketing Stream?

Marketing Stream is a push-based, near-real-time hourly data feed via the Ads API and AWS. It powers dayparting and real-time budget alerts, usually accessed through third-party tools like Pacvue or Perpetua.

How do you measure incrementality?

Through controlled tests and AMC analyses that estimate the sales advertising truly caused versus what would have happened anyway — for example brand-search lift, new-to-brand rates, and geo or audience holdouts. It separates influenced sales from claimed last-touch credit.

What reporting changed with Unified Reporting in 2026?

Unified Reporting became generally available in 2026, combining Sponsored Products, Brands, Display, and DSP into one builder with multi-year history, while legacy report pages are retiring at the end of 2026. See PPC reports explained.

05Scenario & Case Questions

How would you launch a new product with PPC?

Get the listing conversion-ready, then run isolated auto and exact campaigns with aggressive bids and dedicated budget, accepting a high ACoS to build velocity and rank. Judge it on rank and velocity, not ACoS. See product launch strategy.

How do you plan for Prime Day advertising?

Treat it as a multi-week Prime Time window: build audiences and season exact-match campaigns 2–3 weeks ahead, ramp budgets 20–30% a few days out, hold a 15–20% reserve, and keep retargeting on afterward. In the four-day format, budget must survive to days 3–4. See Prime Day advertising.

What is competitor conquesting and when is it worth it?

Conquesting targets rivals’ ASINs and brand terms to win their shoppers, and defends your own. Offense is worth it when you have a real edge (price, reviews, Prime) or when a competitor stocks out; judge it on new-to-brand, not ACoS.

Performance is declining across the account — how do you investigate?

Separate measurement from performance (e.g., the 2026 attribution change), then check conversion rate, stock and pricing, rising CPCs and competition, wasted spend in search term reports, and budget pacing. Fix structural issues before pouring in more budget.

How do you scale spend while staying profitable?

Scale winners first (raise bids 10–15% weekly on top converters), expand into new clusters and match types, add formats, and only then go up-funnel once you hit the demand ceiling — measuring on a stable or falling TACoS and rising new-to-brand, not ACoS alone.

How to prepare
  • Lead with reasoning and trade-offs — interviewers want your judgment, not textbook definitions.
  • Be current on 2026 changes: the attribution model shift and Unified Reporting.
  • Have a clear scaling framework (stabilize → scale winners → expand → up-funnel).
  • Know when and why to move to DSP and how AMC audiences work.
  • Prepare 2–3 real scenarios (launch, Prime Day, declining performance) you can talk through end to end.
