Frequently asked questions
Is Makdi really free? What's the catch?
Completely free and open source (MIT licence), with no URL limits, signups, or trials. It was built for our own sites first; publishing it costs us nothing extra. If it helps you, a mention or link is appreciated but never required.
How is it different from Screaming Frog?
Screaming Frog's free version stops at 500 URLs and excludes saving, comparison and custom search. Makdi has no crawl limit and includes crawl comparison, custom source search, and a scored dashboard with fix suggestions — free. Screaming Frog's paid licence adds JavaScript rendering and integrations Makdi doesn't have.
Does it work for non-English sites?
Yes — fully Unicode-aware in any language. Word counts, duplicate detection and Excel exports work correctly with non-Latin scripts (tested with Devanagari, Gujarati and more).
Will it slow down or harm my website?
It crawls politely (10 pages in parallel by default) and respects robots.txt — the same rules Google follows. A 1,000-page crawl typically finishes in 2–3 minutes.
Is my crawl data private?
Yes. Makdi runs entirely on your computer. No data is sent anywhere; reports and crawl history are saved locally in your Documents folder.
Mac or Linux version?
The Windows installer is official. Mac and Linux users can run the Python source directly from GitHub (MIT licence).
